How to address the challenge of marking components to AS9100 rev D standards

Marking to AS9100 standards

In the aerospace industry, every component must be traceable throughout its entire lifecycle. From raw material to finished assembly, permanent identification plays a critical role in maintaining quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. SIC Marking provides advanced industrial marking solutions that help aerospace manufacturers meet the stringent traceability requirements associated with AS9100 quality management standards.

Our range of dot peen, laser, and scribing marking systems enables manufacturers to create permanent, high-quality marks on a wide variety of aerospace materials while supporting robust production traceability and quality assurance processes.

What is AS9100?

AS9100 is the internationally recognised Quality Management System (QMS) standard for the aerospace, aviation, and defence industries. Based on ISO 9001, AS9100 includes additional requirements focused on:

  • Product safety
  • Risk management
  • Configuration management
  • Supplier control
  • Full product traceability
  • Documentation and record keeping
  • Counterfeit parts prevention

Permanent part identification is a key element of maintaining traceability throughout manufacturing, assembly, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations.

While AS9100 does not prescribe a specific marking technology, it requires manufacturers to ensure that product identification remains durable, legible, and traceable throughout the product lifecycle.

Technical challenges of the marking

Not all components that require marking may be similar in shape and size therefore finding a ‘one size fits all’ machine can be a real challenge for manufacturers. This is why SIC Marking has developed it’s product range to suit 99% of applications.

We have a range of benchtop dot peen and laser marking systems for the companies that are manufacturing small to medium sized precision engineered components.

We also developed a range of fully portably hand held laser and dot peen marking machines for companies working with larger components and fabrications that can also use the same technology to identify their bar stock on arrival.

All of our machines are equipped as standard with the ability to generate: human readable text, 2D Data Matrix codes and Logo’s. Our software also allows for automatic incrementation of serial numbers to avoid any operator error as well as various methods of communication to an MES or ERP systems.

Helping You Meet Aerospace Quality Requirements

Achieving AS9100 certification requires effective quality management and complete product traceability. SIC Marking provides industrial marking solutions that help manufacturers permanently identify critical aerospace components with consistent, high-quality results.

Whether you manufacture aircraft structures, precision machined parts, engines, defence components, or aerospace assemblies, our marking technologies support efficient production, digital traceability, and long-term product identification.
With decades of experience in industrial marking, SIC Marking continues to help aerospace manufacturers improve productivity, strengthen quality assurance, and support compliance with the traceability expectations of the AS9100 quality management framework.

Does AS9100 require permanent part marking?

AS9100 requires organisations to maintain product identification and traceability throughout the manufacturing process and product lifecycle. Permanent marking is one of the most effective methods of meeting these traceability requirements, depending on the
application and customer specifications.

Which marking technology is best for aerospace components?

The ideal marking technology depends on the component material, required mark depth, production speed, and customer requirements. SIC Marking offers dot peen, laser, and scribing solutions suitable for a wide range of aerospace applications.

Can SIC Marking produce Data Matrix codes?

Yes. Our laser and dot peen marking systems produce high-quality Data Matrix codes, serial numbers, text, logos, and other permanent identifiers commonly used in aerospace manufacturing.

Can SIC Marking systems integrate with automated production lines?

Absolutely. Our equipment can be integrated with robotic cells, PLCs, MES platforms, ERP systems, and automated manufacturing lines to support Industry 4.0 production environments.
